30 years after the demise of the Soviet Union, a group exhibition, curated by Benjamin Dodenhoff and Brigitte Franzen, entitled The Cool and the Cold/Painting of the USA and the USSR 1960-1990/Ludwig Collection, which unites paintings from both world-political centres of power created during the Cold War, can be seen in the Gropius Bau.
The selection features approximately 165 artworks by over 100 artists. From the Ludwig collection, works by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Viktor Pivovarov, Ilia Kabakov, Erik Bulatov, Lee Lozano, Natalja Nesterova, Ivan Čujkov and Ivan Lubennikov, among others, will be interrelated. Peter and Irene Ludwig were among the first European collectors of American art and art from the Soviet Union; their extensive collection thus enables a critical juxtaposition of works from both camps of the East-West conflict.
